Zakov: No one can guarantee security in the Black Sea region without Bulgaria and Romania – Politics – Bulgaria – NOVA News
“No one can guarantee security in the Black Sea region without Bulgaria and Romania,” Bulgarian Defense Minister Dragomir Zakov said in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
In the interview, Zakov touched on the upcoming parliamentary week for the public week for a possible delivery to Ukraine, saying it was a matter of great interest. He added that as Minister of Defense, although he understood this fact well, he supported a cautious approach to the issue in the public debate.
The Bulgarian Minister highlighted the excellent relations between Bulgaria and Romania not only at the level of defense ministers, but also at the level of government participation. “Given the case in Ukraine, let him say that we not only have common threats and common conditions, but we also share the common court with Romania, and in this case as allies, not only as neighbors,” Zakov said. He added that regular meetings had been arranged with his Romanian counterpart in the coming months and years.
“As I said, we share a common destiny because I believe, I believe in this: no one can guarantee security and stability in the Black Sea without Bulgaria and Romania,” he said.
Asked to comment on Bulgaria’s hesitation regarding arms supplies to Ukraine, the state said that this is a particularly sensitive issue in Bulgaria for many reasons. According to him, at the same time “we must be fully aware of propaganda, misinformation, try to confuse people.” According to him, the discussion in parliament on the issue is particularly important, because it is about MPs to discuss public issues and make a decision.
“Then it depends on the government to implement this and everything that is required by the decision of me as Prime Minister of Defense or by my structure will be actually in accordance with the decision of the parliament,” said Zakov.
Asked what he said about Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba’s statement that “anyone who does not supply weapons to Ukraine supports Russian aggression in that country,” Dragomir Zakov replied: “Even as a diplomat, because I am also a diplomat, deeply in my heart I think Mr. Kuleba is absolutely right. “
At the same time, the Bulgarian holiday told the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky that each country should help with the possible possibility of being, and if there are no, say, fighters, you could take advantage of other support. “That’s why I said there are many ways to help. Think that Ukraine needs a lot of things. Do not beware that sooner or later, I hope it will be sooner rather than later, I will have another stage when you will have to help reconcile and rebuild Ukraine, “Zakov said.
The Minister expressed the opinion that the Western world is too late to realize what is happening in Ukraine. According to him, however, Bulgaria and Romania have been advocating for many years for the need for a bigger name for NATO.
“I believe that the current circumstances in Ukraine are known, that the Black Sea region is an important region for Euro-Atlantic security and we must be reliable in strengthening this security for all of us, not only for Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, these three allies, but also for NATO as a whole, and I am sure that will be the common vision of the Allies at the June meeting, “Zakov said.
Ask what is the vision of Bulgaria on the occasion of discussing in countries on the national flank of NATO in connection with the permanent military presence, Zakov reminds of the composition of battle groups on the eastern flank and that Bulgaria is one of the host countries in such battle groups.
“As I said, we share the same destiny, the same values, the same threats, the inevitability of working together, Romania and Bulgaria,” he said.
Asked to comment on Bulgaria’s recommendation that its citizens leave Moldova, probably in view of the events in Transnistria, and ask how Bulgaria perceives the situation there, Dragomir Zakov recommends that this is a decision of the Foreign Ministry and suggests that it is a preventive measure to to be avoided in case the situation worsens. “Of course, you know very well that the situation in Transnistria is not so calm, and I consider these measures to be preventive rather than something else,” he added.
According to him, there is a risk for Transnistria and Moldova against the background of the conflict in Ukraine, but “the international community should do everything possible to avoid such scenarios, the spillover of the conflict to Transnistria, because it is not only in Transnistria, not only in “Moldova The spillover could affect the Balkans. And then we can have a bigger problem,” he said.
“These things lead to this conclusion – we need to work together as closely as possible, on each level,” he said.
Asked if diplomacy works in the current circumstances, Chief Zakov said that “diplomacy always works, but it depends on all parties, not just one.”
