Mateusz Morawiecki: Hungary’s resolute resolution is essential
The leaders of the members of the Visegrád Group held several meetings last week without Hungary, despite the fact that Hungary is formally holding the presidency of the V4s. The main topic of discussion was independence from Russian gas. Members of the group have repeatedly criticized Hungary for its behavior in connection with the war in Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki urged the Hungarian government to condemn the Russian aggression and the actions of the Russian soldiers at a meeting with its war colleague Petr Fiala in Warsaw on Friday. According to Morawiecki, Hungary’s resolute resolution is essential for the continued operation of the V4s, because “one cannot turn our backs on what is happening there.” According to the Polish press, the war in Ukraine has wedged between the two: the Warsaw government believes sanctions against Moscow Budapest does not support the country.
The Polish prime minister also met with the Slovak prime minister four days earlier. Eduard Heger said at the time that he was disappointed with the current position of the Hungarian government. Foreign Minister Ivan Korcsok called on his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó, not to communicate as if they wanted to prolong the war with the Slovak, Czech and Polish arms shipments. On the future of the V4, he said practical co-operation should be sought and it could not be maintained that the members of the group had the same foreign policy within the European Union and NATO.
