Calls for an emergency meeting: – Unacceptable
– Another Russian violation of Danish airspace. It is completely unacceptable and extremely worrying in the situation we are in.
It writes Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Jeppe Kofod, on Twitter.
The statement refers to an incident Friday night. On Friday evening, a Russian military aircraft of the type «Antonov 30» was located east of Bornholm and then flew towards Swedish territory.
For a short period, the plane violated Swedish and Danish airspace. The Russian ambassador to Denmark has now been summoned to a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.
On Sunday, the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that a representative of the Russian embassy has been summoned to a meeting.
– Conscious
Several Danish F-16s were sent out in connection with the incident on Friday night.
– We must assume that it was deliberate. This is something the Russians have done once in a while. This is done to test our preparedness. They do it to mark themselves and send a signal that we should not feel safe, says military analyst Anders Puck Nielsen at the Defense Academy to Danish TV 2.
The Swedish Armed Forces stated on its website on Saturday that the Swedish emergency services followed the entire process and took pictures of the incident, the Air Force informs. They also shared a photo that is supposed to be of the current plane.
The images that shook the world
– Completely unacceptable
Sweden’s Minister of Defense, Peter Hultqvist, condemns the incident.
– Completely unacceptable. This was unprofessional, Swedish sovereignty must always be respected, he writes in an SMS to Aftonbladet.
– We take it seriously, we always do, says communications consultant in the Swedish Air Force, Lotta Börjesson, to Expressen.
The incident is not the first time Russian planes have violated Swedish airspace after the war in Ukraine broke out. On March 2, a week after Russia invaded Ukraine, four Russian warplanes violated Swedish airspace. At that time, the area east of Gotland was affected.
