VVD firmly against EU plan for labor migration: ‘Brussels is stepping into a minefield’
The European Commission wants to open the door wider for migrant workers. In certain sectors, staff shortages are enormous. This problem will only increase with the aging population. With the new rules, the European Commission also wants to better protect migrant workers and combat illegal migration.
unskilled workers
But the VVD doesn’t like the plan at all. El Yassini thinks it mainly attracts unskilled workers to Europe. “We need specialist technicians, who will make the solar panels on your roof?” He believes this plan causes more problems than it solves. “The housing market is completely locked up. They can work for us, but where should they live?”
Unutilized labor potential
Employers’ organization VNO-NCW previously called for more labor migration. Do you want that with the lack of manpower? El Yassini looks for the solution in the untapped labor potential. “There are 1.2 million people who want to work or want to work more, but have dropped out in one way or another,” says the Member of Parliament.
Remarkable, thinks political diver Peter Kee. Wil, El Yassini’s party colleague in Europe, Malik Azmani, argued in favor of the European plan. El Yassini says he speaks on behalf of the VVD group in the House of Representatives. He looks at Dutch interests, not just European ones. They are therefore not unanimous within the party.
