Learning Athens: From the Artists’ Hive to the sculpture gallery of the First Cemetery
Five interesting routes“Unfold” this May in different parts of the city, in the context of the action “Athenian Routes” developed by the Athens Culture Net of the Municipality of Athens: A historical journey in the modern history of the capital through its emblematic buildings, an artistic experience in Kypseli with a visit to creative artists’ studios, a walk in the most important monuments of modern Greece in the open museum of the First Cemetery, a special tour of the place where the poets rest, but also a journey in an Athenian setting where a mystery story unfolds.
The goal of the program is through the routes, the participants to get to know different parts of the city, invisible corners, but also unknown stories of Athens from yesterday and today.
From the routes of May, which will start the following Sunday (8/5) and will end on the last Sunday of the month (29/5), both are scheduled in English, giving the opportunity not only to the Greeks, but also to foreign residents or citizens of the city to take part in this original action.

Return to New Athens – Nadia Georgakopoulou (Alexandria Publications) Sunday 8/5
Looking at the past through the future: The author invites the participants to a historical and experiential journey in the first 100 years of modern Athens, to its forgotten – for some – history, as a new capital. Starting from Hadrian’s Gate, the route will stand in emblematic Athenian buildings and public spaces of the 19th century, while the narrative will focus on the architecture, on, but also on the words of the individuals of their protagonists. The walk will continue at Zapioτον National Gardenthe Constitutionthe Ilio Melathronthe Eye clinicthe Catholic Church and the emblematic Athenian Trilogy.

Snehta residency- The Beehive of artists and visual artists | Saturday 14 May
This is an original tour, which shows the evolution of the history of Kypseli, with emphasis on its cultural and mainly artistic course. A video with interviews from local actors will enliven the tour, and give the audience the opportunity to learn more about the story of the collaborating creators. Final stop, which is the physical space of Snehta (I. Drossopoulou 47), where the guest artists will open their studios and the public will be able to see up close the practice followed by this year’s participants, knowing better the history of the institution . The action will end with an open event, inviting the participants, the artists, but also the residents of the neighborhood to enjoy their drink at the artists’ premises.

First Cemetery of Athens Outdoor sculpture case Saturday 21 May
A walk in the most important monuments of modern Greece and an acquaintance with architectural types and expressions of burial sculpture, as presented in the Cemetery of the capital: From the simple tombstones, to the columns with sculptural crown, all-embossed and relief works, as well as temples. The women will get to know the history of the First Cemetery, will learn about the sculptors and marble sculptors who worked there, as well as their relationship with ancient Greek art and romance.

First Cemetery of Athens In the place where poets sleep Saturday 28 May
Palamas, Sikelianos, Seferis, Elytis, K. & E. Ourani, Malakasis, Xenopoulos, Souris, Myrivilis, Kampysis, Varnalis, Lountemis. A tour of the monuments of poets and writers in the First Cemetery of Athens, which remain unknown to the general public. Excerpts from their works will be read during the walk.

Dark Athens – Arthur Antonopoulos (Alexandria Publications) Sunday 29 May
Born in Melbourne, the writer and teacher of English language and literature Arthur Antonopoulos, leads us to an Athens that is the setting of a mystery story. In this story, modern figures of the city have unexpected encounters with figures from Greek mythology.
“Dark Athens”, is a fascinating police adventure in the streets of the city, starring the hidden symbols and the historical monuments that adorn it. The Athenian route of May 29, highlights the transition of Athens from yesterday to the modern attractive and historic metropolis. Following in the footsteps of the heroine of his book, who tries to unravel the tangle of a conspiracy, the route starts from the City Hall of Athens (Kotzia Square) and will continue to Klafthmonos Square and the buried Walls of the city and the Old Parliament. Then it will head to the historic buildings of Syntagma and the commercial streets (Ermou and Stadiou) to reach Zappeion.
