The “Reds” did it quickly. Second division soccer team Hannover 96 is very close to staying up after beating Karlsruher SC 2-0 (1-0) on Friday evening.
The preparation for the party was not easy for 96 coach Christoph Dabrowski. After all, managing director Martin Kind confirmed to NDR on Wednesday that Coach Stefan Leitl from Greuther Fürth, who has been relegated to the Bundesliga, is the preferred candidate for the coming season. Which means nothing else that Dabrowski’s time as Hannover’s head coach will end after this season.
“I can only concentrate on the tasks with the team. And that’s what I conveyed to the team: that we only concentrate on football, ignore everything else and take a big step towards the goal today,” said the 43-year-old.

In fact, he has already fulfilled 99 percent of his task of leading the “Reds” to stay up in the league. Thanks to the home win on matchday 32, there are now nine points ahead of the relegation rank held by Dynamo Dresden. And should the Saxons not get beyond a draw in the home game against Jahn Regensburg on Saturday, the Hanoverians can celebrate on the sofa this weekend.
Weydandt livens up the 96 game with his goal
However, the start of the game against KSC was anything but a plan. Dabrowski had promised “a fight” after the pitiful 0:3 in Paderborn against Karlsruhe, but there was no sign of implementation in the early stages. The “Reds” continued where they left off in East Westphalia: with an uninspired ball attachment.

In the 24th minute there would have been the right acknowledgment: KSC professional Tim Breithaupt put his header just wide of the goal. In return, Hendrik Weydandt did a much better job. The Lower Saxony striker nodded off after a cross from Linton Maina to make it 1-0 (25′). First chance, first goal – in terms of efficiency, what the hosts delivered was outstanding in any case.
Hannover missed a very good chance to make it 2-0
It could have gone on like this if Maximilian Beier had made a better pass to Weydandt, who had run with him, and he would have had the empty goal in front of him. However, Beier chose the low shot and this shot missed the post (32nd). Both teams still had good chances after that – Fabian Schleusener for Karlsruhe (33′), Maina for the “Reds” (42′) – but it was 1-0 at the break.
Beier decided doubts about the home win
After the restart, Karlsruhe pushed for an equaliser, but they rarely became dangerous. Schleusener had another good opportunity, but his shot from close range was blocked (59′). 96 relied mainly on securing the defense and they did it quite well. The party rippled along until overtime. In this Beier made it 2-0 after a counterattack (90+4).
