New Africa UniNet projects with strong Innsbruck participation – University of Innsbruck
As part of the OeAD’s second Africa-UniNet call for proposals, a total of 21 cooperative research projects between universities and research institutions in all countries and Austria were accepted for funding. “Three scientists from the University of Innsbruck will work together with colleagues in Nigeria and Ethiopia over the next two years on topics in the fields of music ethnography, subject didactics and limnology,” says a pleased Africa-UniNet board member and contact person at the University of Innsbruck , Professor Anke Bockkreis.
The projects involve partnerships with institutions in 12 different African countries: Burkina Faso, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda. Ethiopia tops the list of partner countries with six partnerships, including Kenya, South Africa and Uganda with five partnerships each. A total of 22 different African universities and research institutes are involved from the 35 participating member institutions. In addition, 11 different Austrian higher education institutions are involved in the projects. More than half of the projects are coordinated by the youngest partner institution.

- Monitoring and removal of cyanobacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes from drinking water sources | Redeemer’s University (Nigeria) with the University of Innsbruck (project partner: Rainer Kurmayer, Research Institute for Limnology Mondsee)
The Africa UniNet projects are monitored by the BMBWF with a total funding of approx. 500,000 euros for a project duration of up to two years. The topics of the projects span a variety of disciplines, from medicine, health, agriculture, water resource management, renewable energy to business and education. Common to all projects is a collaborative and participatory approach and the goal of contributing to the obvious of the Sustainable Development Goals. The projects are currently in the contracting process and will start in the months to come. Further information will be published at the start of the project.
