Liechtenstein: Landesbank modernizes IT with low-code
With a legacy system based on Lotus Notes, the financial institution not only covered calendar and e-mail functions for many years. Over time, the in-house IT team also maintained hundreds of proprietary applications, including budgeting tools, risk management applications and travel databases, which enabled client advisors to obtain deal approvals.
“In the past, Lotus Notes served us well,” recalls Alex Greber, Head of IT Engineering at Landesbank Liechtenstein (LLB). “In terms of its technology, the solution seemed to us, but not sustainable enough for the planned further development of our application landscape.” Sooner or later, the LLB wants to develop mobile applications, which cannot be realized with the old technology.
In the search for alternatives, Gerber’s team is dealing with rapid application development, among other things, and finally found a suitable approach with low-code. In the end, OutSystems won the race among the three vendor candidates on the short list. “Nowadays, if you want to build business logic quickly and efficiently, you can’t avoid low-code,” Sagr Greber.
The deciding factor for OutSystems was the ease of use and the transparency of the system: “You don’t have to be an SQL or UI/UX specialist to be able to work with it,” says the IT manager. This was an important aspect, especially for the former Lotus Notes developers, in order to be able to develop efficient and sustainable software.
Four employees now take care of creating applications using low-code. To date, the bankers have used more than 15 applications on the platform, and around 20 more are planned. For example, an application was created to track business-critical processes at the Landesbank. Handle other tasks that arise in suspected cases of money laundering. To do this, the app imports data from the core banking system that is required for follow-up processes.
In the medium term, the LLB will replace other outdated fat client systems. This includes, for example, the frontend for the archive system and the internal administration app for online banking. The low-code platform should become the standard for such aspects.
The Liechtensteinische Landesbank (LLB), founded in 1861, employs a good 1,000 people. It offers financial and wealth services to business and private customers. In addition to Liechtenstein, the company’s focus markets also include Switzerland and Austria. The financial institution is also present in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
