Lecture about ‘petrostate’ the Netherlands in Loppersum
The Historical Association Loppersum, in collaboration with Utrecht University, presents a lecture on the ‘cultural history of the Dutch petrostate’.
dr. Gertjan Plets explains on May 2 in Ons Dorpshuis in Loppersum what the influence is of the long history of natural gas and oil in the Netherlands on both ordinary culture and political structures.
In the presentation the (colonial) history of natural gas and oil is explained and connected with practical concepts and contemporary problems. In addition, Plets, senior lecturer in cultural history and heritage studies, will highlight the Carbon Cultures project. For historians, the description of gas and oil history is challenging because of the impending loss of resources. Plets plans to develop a documentation center for the gas and oil history of the Netherlands, which residents of the earthquake zone may be able to contribute to by making their correspondence with various authorities available. A bottom-up historiography is central to Carbon Cultures. The project group therefore not only works with sources from the archives of Shell and the state, but especially with local sources to map the perspective of the citizens.
The lecture is freely accessible and starts at 7.30 pm in Ons Dorpshuis at 22 Wirdumerweg in Loppersum.
