Brazil wants Portugal
Work, live, invest, study, walk around. Five verbs that are condensed into just one: to live. Portugal is the new permanent address for more and more Brazilians. From all social classes. The “little land” became an “eldorado” and Portugal is today the new Miami of the 21st century.
Non-mathematics is deceiving. The number of Brazilians legally residing in Portugal grew for the fifth consecutive year and reached a record 29,072 people in 2022. An increase of 13.6% compared to 2020.
But these numbers are just Brazilians who choose Brazil to live and have a completely regularized process – the total number is higher. members of the sum of dual nationalities, the students, their families, the “Italians”, those who come to try it are Portuguese; and those who are already here but have not yet dealt with all the papers.
Without exaggerating, talking about 550 thousand, who in a way either chose Portugal as their first or even home. Almost 6% of the Portuguese population… and those who closely follow this movement that everything is just beginning.
The signs follow one another. In the same week that the president of the Brazilian Federal Senate comes to celebrate the bicentennial of independence in Brazil in the city of Coimbra, João Fiks, an IT specialist, was the first of 300 employees that the company WIT Software hired directly in Brazil to go live in Belmonte, birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral.
Perceiving this historic movement, leaders perceive themselves. The Brazilian embassy in Portugal wants equivalence in education systems, at secondary level; the University of Coimbra wants a permanent representation in Brazil – and both are absolutely right. Language is the software of the future.
