5 thriving community gardens in Budapest
The community gardens hidden in the concrete jungle of Budapest are of great importance for both environmental protection and community building.
First Kis-Pest Garden
During the gardening season, life is huge in the first community garden of Kispest, created with the support of the municipality, which has been cared for by the local population with unbroken enthusiasm for ten years now. The garden, which is hidden between the prefabricated houses and covers an area of almost a thousand square meters, maintains a common spice garden, has set up fireplaces for various community programs, and also has a walk-in biology lesson for children. In addition, garden users strive for plastic-free and re-use, and are also welcome to take in external organic waste as a community compost collection point.

Small Walnut Community Garden
The garden with the most active community in Budapest is the VII. in the middle of a district party district, hiding behind a green iron gate that perfectly fits the environment. Entering here, however, the green oasis, which is unusual in the city center, welcomes visitors on a total of 700 square meters. In the Kisniófa Community Garden, the area is divided into individual and study plots, but there is still room for an insect shelter, a bird feeder and a waterer, and even a small garden pond. The garden also operates as a composting point, so anyone can dispose of organic household waste here at designated times, but we can also take part in producer markets and workshops at Little Walnut Tree.

As a result of the unusual cooperation, it now produces 200 m2 of useful plants, herbs and spices in the local community in a cultivated area and on 40 plots, some of which always supply the hotel kitchen with fresh, seasonal vegetables and edible flowers. Even a curious visitor can look into the therapeutic garden, which fills both body and soul, if they are just there to take care of the plants.

Rose garden
Last summer, the community garden of Terézváros opened in the middle of the urban concrete jungle, on a dental bridge in Rózsa Street. The 850-square-meter green island is not only home to beds for kitchen garden vegetables, flowers and herbs, but also a public park with wooden benches and a community composter. In April, the Rose Garden had already begun to awaken, the onions, currants and raspberries that had been overwintered last year had sprouted, and in the coming weeks and months, all the plants would surely turn green. In the recreation park we can spend time among daffodils during the day, but if they are just taking care of the garden, we can even look around there.

Aurora Climate Garden
An VIII. The Aurora Community House developed a self-sustaining, permaculture garden from a district parking lot in 2006, the goal of which, unlike most community gardens, was to restore the area’s natural ecosystem. Mushrooms, earthworms, bees, birds, beetles and a cohesive, conscious local community were quick to help create a microclimate, so we can now find a cooling green space on the site of the former concrete site. The climate garden organizes workshops, shared cooking and other varied programs, and is open every Tuesday and Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.
