Carles Puigdemont is a Catalan politician and journalist from Spain. He has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) since 2019.
A former mayor of Girona, he was the 130th President of Catalonia from 2016 to 2017, when he was ousted by the Spanish government following the unilateral Catalan declaration of independence. The Spanish government suspended the elected Catalan government, including President Puigdemont. In response to a wave of political repression, he was forced into exile in Belgium. Charges of rebellion, sedition and embezzlement were brought against members of the legitimate Catalan government.
Carles Puigdemont is now a free European citizen living in Belgium, where he heads the Council for the Catalan Republic, an institution dedicated to defending Catalonia’s civil and political rights in the European free space.
