Thessaloniki: More than 36 million smuggled packs of cigarettes were confiscated
In the context of the audits it carries out the Independent Public Revenue Authority for the suppression of the smuggling and trafficking of drugs, weapons, cigarettes and counterfeit products, the Department for the Prosecution of Smuggling of the First Customs of Thessaloniki, proceeded to the confiscation of thirty six million one hundred thousand (36,100,000) pieces of contraband. On 13/04/2022, after a risk analysis Smuggling Prosecution DepartmentA container with declared “wooden cutlery” was selected for inspection, for which a request for rail transport had been submitted to Bulgaria and was located in an adjacent Accounting Warehouse area.
Initially, a test was performed by the smoking detector dog “HACKER”, which gave evidence of smoking. Subsequently, a sample check was carried out on the remaining cargo, which had arrived by road the previous days and remained inside the Accounting warehouse.
The search led to the discovery of a huge quantity of smuggled cigarettes, which belonged to goods declared as “wooden cutlery” and “safety shoes”, which had arrived by road from Bulgaria, having been declared as Greek consignees and as recipients.
The next day, and with the assistance of the Coordination Business Center (SEC), EL.Y.T. Attica found that Greek companies do not exist in the declared headquarters.
In total, after the completion of the inspections, 36.1 million smuggled cigarettes were found, which were confiscated.
The corresponding duties and taxes amount to a total of 7.32 million euros.
