Index – Culture – Waving between underground and mainstream

The WAVY Budapest team started their careers a few months ago in the form in which we can now see them. The Shipyard Music x Sight At the latest event in the series of programs called Kerényi, they tapped the footwear for the fashion show of Kerényi Virág, which provided a visual part of the event.

The host of the evening was Zsófi Szigeti (Solére). Although the team is already past three full-house parties in Toldi, they performed on the A38 stage for the first time in a line-up that is also part of their future.

The team, which consists mainly of the alternative hip-hop genre, includes performers (Co Lee, Aminon, Kebab), producers and DJs (Blaize, Ezial, Buku), but as they place a strong emphasis on appearance and image in addition to music, there is also a member responsible for a separate visual appearance (Quan) and coordinating press appearances, often contributing as a photographer, videographer (Yungmatka). A separate team in the person of János Szabó and Máté Kalicz stood up for the official photo documentation of the promotions and events supporting the image.

The primary goal of the collective is to give its members the opportunity to create freely, be it music or even content production, and to be able to create value as a result without rules and restrictions. For those unfamiliar with the underground music medium, a fresh and surprising experience can be the kind of slack that boys can play. However, this should not be confused with negligence or amateurism, as one of the two founding members, Mark Bornemissza, aka “Not Sure,” puts it:

This kind of freedom does not mean that there is no feedback or that we do not learn from our mistakes. If we need to, we’re going to change our stuff to make WAVY a much more professional creative and musical lifestyle brand over time.

“Among other things, this event was a super debut opportunity because it was the first time we had the opportunity to try ourselves as a team within a given performance. Nor is the Shipyard itself an organic and free platform that allows for initiatives like WAVY. In addition to enjoying it, we learned a lot from it, ”says Márk.

Slowly, for sure

WAVY’s slogan (Lo and Slo) also marks a way for them to develop slowly, at their own pace, to do more and more upward work. Over time, it is likely that part of this development will be the fact that the team currently presenting very English texts will also be in Hungarian later, as this is still one of the key conditions within Hungary.

“The point would be to slow down a bit, let both the performers and the audience enjoy the products of the creative mind, but not like in a box that we then throw away and the next one can come. That’s why it’s important to value and use what you have to say, not just “disposable” social media-compatible commonplaces. The goal is to inspire others, inspire thought, and create content that is truly colorful for people with different mindsets to appreciate. ”

Mark calls what has been a cool learning process so far, and sees the occasions at Toldi as a big house party, as the audience is largely made up of friends from the performers and returning familiar faces.

This is a small village

At home, I think there are no classic boundaries between mainstream and underground hip-hop, because the underground as a segment is so sneaky that it doesn’t really exist. There are at most style trends. What really matters right now is the number of views and “access”

– formulate the problems of the genre Mark.

“It’s a small village where everyone knows everyone and the neighbor’s grass is always greener. that is why the whole rap scene has been incapable of continuous renewal and development for decades, as everyone looks at each other, instead of boldly, operating with their own ideas and letting the world around us try to actually step out of this collective comfort zone in terms of sound or even visuality. . Of course, the exception also strengthens the rule, ”says Mark, citing Beton.Hofit (Ádám Schwarcz) as an example, who said that the rap scene soon became a fresh spot in terms of both text and say, style and visuality (Miki357).

Ádám’s career has been completely over his head for the last year, tickets for his concerts in Budapest are running out in minutes. However, in addition to today’s conditions and marketing dumping, too fast a pace can have many setbacks as it is in the deck that the performances of performers will soon burn out.

Due to the current “hype” and marketing machinery, the process of popular divorce takes place in a very short time these days. A narrow layer suddenly makes a big profit and then the next one can come systematically. This is called mass production.

According to Mark, everything has a warranty period, and if this time interval is to be fully filled or even extended, continuous renewal is needed, which can be supported by well-thought-out decisions and thoughtfully constructed, conscious image projects.

The team plans for the long term and looks to the future with confidence: “We don’t want to be in the public consciousness for a year or two, we plan for the longer term. The point is that the learning process is enjoyable for everyone and that the upward trajectory is at an optimal angle. I think this is called sustainable growth. That is what we will proudly look back on. ”

The festival season is coming

WAVY Budapest will surely be there at the Colorado Festival between June 29 and July 2 (FRAME stage) and the Golem Festival. But there are other exciting programs for the team and, of course, for their audience this summer:

It looks like we’ll be able to have our own two-day, mini-festival event this year, July 8-9. between, next to Lake Balaton. We don’t want to shout, but if it comes together, it will be an outdoor event, in every spirit, that characterizes this whole initiative. But before that, I suggest everyone come to a tellis event to experience what a real WAVY party is like! Also, we’ve just shot a new clip these days for the big brothers who make up Slow Village, which will debut on April 20th. This is the first WAVY production we didn’t shoot for ourselves and it became a percussive little material!

In addition, the WAVY team will be waiting for those who want to party all night long in Budapest, including the A38 Roof Terrace, the Aquarium Kiss Hall or the Pontoon Ship.
