2nd Video Festival in Chinese on UN Chinese Language Day

The second Chinese-language video festival, organized by the United Nations Office at Geneva, UNOG, the UN Permanent Mission of China in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, and the China Media Group, CMG, was held at the UN -Chinese Language Day held in Geneva on Wednesday.

The video festival brought together participants from over 45 countries and regions, including the UK, France, Italy, Germany and the US. In around 950 video contributions, the participants presented their vivid experiences of a civilized, modern and youthful China.

China Media Group director Shen Haixiong called the UN Chinese Language Day a celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity and a celebration of promoting the widespread dissemination of the concept of multilateralism. He continued in a speech that, as a group of international mainstream media, the CMG will continue to carry out the task of responsible media and take practical measures to break down barriers and improve understanding, so that the world can have more understanding and more peace, and so build together to foster a community of shared future for humanity. Shen Haixiong also said the video festival showcases the innovative development of traditional Chinese culture in China’s new era and the beauty of various civilizations in the world through the fusion of ideas, art and technology.

Tatyana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations in Geneva, said the UN Chinese Language Day is dedicated to promoting cultural diversity and multilingualism. This year’s festival will open the doors to traditional Chinese culture and provide a great opportunity to promote China’s cultural diversity among the younger generation and non-native speakers.

Ambassador Chen Xu of China’s UN Permanent Mission in Geneva, who is also China’s representative to other international organizations in Switzerland, said it is difficult to truly understand the unique spiritual world of the Chinese people without the long and distinguished Chinese to know culture. He expects that the UN Chinese Language Day will continue to play the role of a window and a bridge, and will make more foreign friends understand China, love Chinese culture and pay attention to China’s development, and that the day will be a play an active role in promoting cultural exchanges and people-to-people relations between countries.

The date for UN Chinese Language Day was chosen to coincide with the traditional Chinese festival of Guyu (Rain of Grains), which falls on the sixth of the 24 solar days of the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people in the Chinese culture honor Cang Jie, who is said to have invented the Chinese characters in ancient China.
