The Tyrolean Caritas will raise awareness of poverty
Innsbruck, 04/19/2022 (KAP) In many European cities, the “International Day of the Station Mission” will start with celebrations on Thursday (April 21) – including Innsbruck. Sausages, rolls and non-alcoholic drinks will be offered on the forecourt of the main train station (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.), announced the Innsbruck diocese. Visitors to the station social service are invited to eat sausages, but so are people who use public transport. The goal of the campaign in the words of Caritas director Elisabeth Rathgeb: “To draw attention to the fact that not everyone is doing equally well and that a society only works if we also look at the people on the fringes”. The festival offers the opportunity to approach each other in public space.
The railway station social service (BSD) is the oldest institution of Caritas Tirol and was founded in 1911 as a railway station mission. The facility was closed during World War I and World War II, then reopened in 1946. The BSD is a contact, advice, information and referral center at the Innsbruck main train station. The focal points of the BSD’s work are the support and care of homeless people and the associated raising of awareness of the problems of fringe groups at the train station.
In addition to advice on topics such as work, housing or debts, visitors get breakfast and dinner in the Wolfgangstube. The BSD also arranges places to sleep and basic medical care. He also offers help for travelers in difficulty or supports them in contacting the authorities. (Information: www.caritas-tirol.at/hilfe-angebote/menschen-in-not/bahnhofsozialdienst)
