From “red Vienna” to “new social housing” at Iba Wien 2022 – neighboring Austria – Blog
The first international architectural exhibition (IBA) on Austrian soil will take place in Vienna and will focus on the future of housing and city construction. In the context of the final presentation, which will open at the end of June 2022, will be in the spotlight buildings and neighborhoods that thematize the “new social housing”, but in which climate change also plays a role.
International architectural exhibitions for over 120 years. The format was born in Germany and serves as a tool to give new impulses in the field of urban planning and construction. Under the title “New social housing” Vienna is organizing an architectural exhibition for the first time international. The project was created in 2016 by the City of Vienna and will enter its expected final phase in the middle of this year. The buildings erected in the meantime for six months will become the “objects” exhibited in the framework of the Iba Wien 2022.
Final presentation starting from the end of June
The final presentation of IBA Wien 2022 starts on 23 June. It lasts until 18 November. The curtain will be raised on new buildings and neighborhoods scattered throughout the city and which forms a model of new forms of social housing. In addition, a large exhibition is planned at Nordwestbahnstrasse 16, which will form a central hub for people to architecture. A rich program, guided tours and walks dedicated to Iba neighborhoods and projects invite you to explore the processes and results of the exhibition. The Nordwestbahnhalle is the central meeting point for all the public and the starting point for many guided tours and initiatives related to the IBA.
Vienna as a center of social housing
But we will not focus only on the quality of the buildings. IBA Wien 2022 follows an interdisciplinary approach. Social structure and coexistence play a fundamental role in this look into the future of housing. How should city districts be conceived to allow the development of a good social life? What social needs do the inhabitants have, and how does the best possible quality of life arise? Thanks to historical circumstances, such as the Red Vienna building program between 1919 and 1934 and a world record value for the share of social housing, Vienna is an ideal place to highlight the innovative development of social housing. Nearly one in four apartments in Vienna is social housing. In addition, issues related to resource-friendly construction also play an important role in the context of Iba Wien 2022. For example, the demand for the building approaches needed to build sustainably in times of climate change.
Building in times of climate change
Building projects and neighborhoods that focus on climate in the context of Iba Wien 2022 are for example the Biotope City, a neighborhood totally in the 10th district of Vienna, which despite the high building density focuses on creating the maximum of green areas. The Biotope City demonstrates that in the area of subsidized housing the economic and climatic aspects are not a contradiction. The MGG22 building project in the Donaustadt district also focuses on the topic of climate. Here, for the first time, thermal mass activation for heating and cooling is used in social housing. In this way, a 100% renewable energy supply can be guaranteed throughout the year.
New city district in the spotlight
A total of nine new model neighborhoods for new forms of social housing are to be discovered as part of the Iba Wien 2022. The district of Neu Leopoldau, which is being built in the area of a former gas plant, is in the foreground as is that of Sonnwendviertel with its innovative building group projects and the project in Wolfganggasse, where a new city area is located with around 850 subsidized apartments, a kindergarten, supermarket and other short-haul supply stores.
Particularly in the new city districts, the interdisciplinary approach of the Iba Wien is evident: the Am Seebogen district combines the themes of housing and work. The project is part of that of Seestadt Aspern, one of the largest city development projects in Europe, and shows innovative paths for the mix of uses. The aim is to lay the foundations for the development of a diversified social infrastructure. A business nursery, a supermarket and more than ten shops that bring economic impulses to the Am Seebogen district. In addition, countless initiatives on the subject of health, movement, sport that include a rich offer for all the people who live in the neighborhood.
Buildings with future
Among the most significant individual buildings of Iba Wien 2022 is Vivihouse, which is based on an innovative building system for the construction of multi-storey buildings for mixed use. This construction procedure based on a wooden skeleton has been specially optimized for the use of environmentally friendly raw materials.
The European innovation project Huyseful focuses on the circular economy approach. Here, innovative systems are developed for local reuse as a wastewater and household waste resource, which are then implemented in demonstration buildings.
An exciting preview of the future of housing can also be had in Home 21, a project born within the framework of the Viennese instant housing program, which aims at affordable housing for groups. It allows you to temporarily build residential buildings even in areas that are not intended for residential construction.
In more than one hundred projects they have helped to indicate the way for the future, and are waiting to be discovered starting from 23 June. The complete and up-to-date program of Iba Wien can be found on the website www.iba-wien.atin German and English.
