Direct mountain. Fewer deaths in avalanches this winter in Switzerland
It hadn’t gone down for the last 20 years. In its annual report, the Swiss Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) reported that the 2021-2022 winter was less deadly than the average for the past two decades in terms of avalanches.
As of April 11, of the 145 avalanches reported to the institute (material and bodily damage), the number of flows involving people was 116, compared to the average of 131 on that date. Twelve people still lost their lives in the Swiss mountains, but this is a third less than the usual average. Among the victims, seven were hiking and five off-piste skiing. All described themselves in a high risk area during the accident. The SLF explains the decrease in particular by a winter that was poor in snow and very dry in certain months, thus stabilizing the snowpack.
