Basketball – Munich – Hoeneß on the new basketball arena: Expect “real boost” – Bayern
Munich (dpa) – Bayern Honorary President Uli Hoeneß expects the new venue for the Munich basketball players to give a similar boost to that for the footballers from the Allianz Arena. “I think that FC Bayern football has made a huge step with the Allianz Arena. Although the Olympic Stadium is not a bad stadium, it was not taken seriously in Barcelona and Madrid. But the Allianz Arena is a jewel case and ahead Everything that the opponents are scared of, like the Camp Nou or the Bernabeu, Hoeneß told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” in an interview.
That’s how it is with the Audi Dome at the moment, “it’s good, the mood is really great. But you have almost double the number of spectators in the SAP Garden, you can do a whole lot more. I’m expecting a real boost, quite apart from that that you have completely different economic options,” said the 70-year-old.
The SAP Garden is to be occupied in autumn 2023. The arena in the Olympia Park in Munich is designed to seat up to 11,500 spectators. It will be the new home of the Bayern basketball team and the EHC Red Bull Munich ice hockey club.
Hoeneß said about the development of the basketball players, who have reached the Euroleague playoffs for the second time in a row: “The next season, supposedly the season after next, will be the measure of all things, because the new hall will be ready in autumn 2023. And then, in my view, a new era must begin at FC Bayern. You don’t have to be at the top by then, but you have to believe internationally.”
