Beer has been popular for several years, and initiatives in this sector are teeming. In the agglomeration of Rouen (Seine-Maritime), a Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, a brewpub project is underway, that is to say a place that will bring together a beer production space and a place of consumption/pub. The 1989 brewery, that’s its name, is due to open in September 2022, in an 80 square meter space, in the Madrillet Technopôle district. In this context, a crowdfunding campaign has been created.
Flashy universe and US flavors
At the origin and at the helm of this adventure, we find three young Normans (Thibault and two Cédrics) who have been brewing for 7 years. After having started as passionate amateurs, at home, they gradually professionalized and left their jobs in banking or as digital consultants. The company was born in 2019. The name, 1989, refers to their year of birth, but also to a whole geek/video game universe of the 1980s-90s that they love. All the visual design is so flashy, achieve in the but to catch the eye.
The beers are sold in cans and not in bottles, there too it is an aesthetic choice. In terms of taste, the 1989s are beers that draw their inspiration from the US and British styles, “hoppy beers, not too bitter, juicy in the mouth”, describes Thibault. In terms of raw materials and ingredients, the wheat comes from France, the hops from the United States – the brewers have planted some in France but it will take several years before enjoying them – and the yeast from Italy.
If the ranges of beers are already distributed in Rouen and all over France, the brewpub project brings another dimension to the business. The opening of the consumption/afterwork area is scheduled for September. The production space will be operational by the end of the year. For now, the brewers continue to produce Going through the technical means of other professionals already established. And there will be key hires, over the next few years, between brewing and pub life.
