NLDelta and 5 national parks put bird migration in the Netherlands on the map with free migratory bird poster
WORKING AM With a beautiful migratory bird poster, NLDelta, the Wadden Sea World Heritage and five national parks along the Dutch coasts put bird migration in the spotlight. The poster tells the fascinating story of the annual migration of tens of millions of birds along the Netherlands. Food is available for many migratory birds on the boundary between water and land. The national parks Oosterschelde, Nieuw Land, Duinen van Texel, Lauwersmeer and Schiermonnikoog, NLDelta and World Heritage Waddenzee are located exactly along this water-rich border of water and land, icons of the Dutch Delta Nature where many of these migratory birds can be seen. The poster will be available from Easter. Information about is on www.visitnldelta.nl†
BILLIONS OF MIGRATORY BIRDS The bird migration. Perhaps one of the fascinating phenomena in our nature. Every year, billions of migratory birds migrate across the globe from their wintering grounds to their breeding grounds and back again. They fly for hundreds of miles at a time, defying many dangers along the way. Our country is located exactly at an important junction in the middle of the East Atlantic migration route. More than three hundred different species of migratory birds pass by here every year. There must be sufficient safe and nutritious roadside restaurants along the entire route. The route is only as strong as its weakest link.

MIGRATORY BIRD POSTER AVAILABLE FOR FREE Janneke van Montfort of the National Parks Bureau: ,,We would like the special story of bird migration and the role that the Dutch national parks play, to be known to people. Do you want ‘make known love’. That is why parks, NLDelta and Wadden Sea World Heritage have entered into a partnership to draw attention to this special original with a national migratory bird poster for young and old.”
The poster is not only beautiful on the wall, but also provides an insight into the international migratory routes of eleven iconic migratory birds that visit the Netherlands every year. Painter Erik van Ommen has made beautiful illustrations. can pick up the migratory bird poster free of charge at the visitor centers of areas and at the various visitor centers. For more information, go to www.visitnldelta.nl.
WANT TO SEE MIGRATORY BIRDS IN REAL? The national parks along the Dutch coasts provide safe ‘harbours’ for migratory birds. Migratory birds can mainly be admired in the spring and autumn, also in NLDelta. Via the QR code on the poster you can find out exactly where you need to be and when excursions are organised. Don’t forget your binoculars!
SPRING TREASURE Forester Ham Blom: ,,Here in the Biesbosch and in the entire southwestern delta, April and May are the months for the spring migration. Not only do all species of breeding birds that overwinter in the south return one by one, there is also a lot of migration during these months. Birds that hibernate south of us and fly to the highlands to breed, stop en masse in the delta. The showpiece is the osprey. Since 2016, it has not only been the largest migrating bird of prey in the delta, but more ospreys are choosing our area to build a nest. In addition to passing through, they also become more breeding birds, which is a strong confirmation of the value of this Delta area!”
The migratory bird project is part of NLDelta’s education implementation programme.
