Best Norwegian in the Scania Cup

Ullern’s 06 boys stood out against some of the best teams in the Nordics, won four matches and are the big favorites in the U16-NM at Hønefoss in two weeks.

Led by point guard and great talent Oscar Hellebust, Ullern fought to 59-58 over Swedish Lobas and 59-57 over Danish BMS Herlev in the first two matches and secured group victory with 65-53 over a strong AIK Stockholm team in match number three.

Then they advanced to the quarterfinals against Fryshuset from Stockholm (51-60), before Danish Alba was beaten 58-44 on Monday morning in a new, solid Ullern match. But the forces were about to ebb and in match number six it was a big loss 43-82 against the same AIK team they beat in the group game.

Have not lost in Norway

– We delivered a very good effort and won several bone matches against teams must be better than us, which is actually Tom Barkvoll.

He has trained and coached Ullern’s 06 boys the last three seasons and has not yet been involved in losses against Norwegian teams. That is why Ullern is the clear favorites in the U16-NM at Hønefoss in two weeks.

– We have plans to go all the way there, but take nothing for granted, says Barkvoll.

Unstoppable Ullern guard

Oscar Hellebust led Ullern’s offensive and became the Scania Cup top scorer in the 06 class with 176 points – 29.3 points on average per. match! He had 33, 32, 36, 24, 31 and 20 points in a row in the six matches – on 3-pointers and other long shots, driver and penalties.

The 15-year-old became almost unstoppable for the other Nordic opponents.

– Oscar is a fantastic player who has everything except the size of so far. He can become one of the best players Norway has produced. Then he is an incredibly good team player and not and like many good young players often, said the Ullern coach.

– But it was not Oscar alone who won matches for us. The players around him stepped up and it is also their merit that Oscar gets to be as good as he is, Barkvoll adds.

Tight losses, men quarterfinals

Ullern’s G05 team is ready for the Super Final in the Europa League EYBL in Riga next weekend, and got a nice run-through in the Scania Cup. But undoubtedly missed Oscar Hellebust, who naturally had to be given priority in his own year class, 2006.

Oscar is the second-top scorer in EYBL’s 2nd division with 19.1 points per. match and best in assists, and would undoubtedly be able to turn some of Ullern’s losses in the 05-class in the Scania Cup into victories.

The team smoked a fine 66-70 against Danish Falcon and 57-59 against Östersund in the group game, the Danish BMS Herlev was beaten 69-58 in a solid 8th round final from the blues.

I placement game, Østersund was again a little too strong (74-64), while the last match against Malbas (Malmö) ended in a dramatic way.

Ullern was below 59-60 when Emil Unnli was fouled with 5 seconds left to play. He coldly lowered both and gave Ullern 61-60, but Malbas managed just one last attack and a score to 62-61 in the very last second!

Tough losses, but bright spots

After a year of corona break, it became tough for several of the 23 Norwegian teams to debut or be back in international matches. Like it was several bright spots and most of the layers lifted considerably after tough pulls in the beginning.

* Next to Ullern G06 and Ullern G05, Frøya’s 03/04 boys also reached the quarterfinals, after victories over Fryshuset and Finnish Sykki.

* Bøler G07 and Kjelsås G05 also went on from group play to the 8th round final, Kjelsås really without a win and because there were only three teams in the group.

* The 18 other Norwegian teams went straight to placement matches.

* Ullern G06 and EB85 G08 both went out of the tournament with four wins and two losses.

* Bøler G07, Centrum Tigers G06, Oppsal G05, Frøya G03 / 04 and Kolbotn G03 / 04 emerged victorious from two matches.

* 9 Norwegian teams went home without victories and in last place in their classes. Another 4 Norwegian teams with victories only over other Norwegian teams.

Solid by EB85

Most surprising was undoubtedly EB85’s 08 boys, who won four of six matches and played evenly against the top team Fryshuset.

Norwegian basketball has traditionally had great problems asserting itself among the youngest, who have had to endure ugly losses in the Scania Cup debut. Here came an EB85 team as amazed with aggressive and tough defense, full track pressure and high tempo. Harald Lilledahl with 103 points in total and Edvard Orskaug with 87 led, but here coach Vasileios Tsernisof has already created a team where everyone contributes and plays with high intensity – and where new players have to come up with important goals in the matches.

EB85 led 53-47 over Fryshuset a few minutes before the end, but lost 53-56 against the team that became the losing finalist in the tournament. They also took strong viewers over the organizing club Södertälje (58-32) and Högsbo (61-37) and beat Finnish ToPo twice, 53-50 and 64-56.

This gang will definitely hear more about Norwegian basketball in the coming years. The EB team won the Bærum Open in September last year and will now match in the Copenhagen Invitational in June.
