15,000 eggs broken for the giant omelet of Bessières near Toulouse
She is celebrating her big comeback this year. After two years of absence, the giant omelette of Bessières in Haute-Garonne was prepared and tasted this Pascal Monday. A great popular festival which is always a great success.
Bessières revives its tradition. Deprived of a giant omelette for two years because of the covid pandemic, the small town located about thirty kilometers north of Toulouse was finally able to celebrate the event this Easter Monday.
The recipe is extremely simple but the proportions make you dizzy… Because to prepare this gargantuan dish you need 15,000 eggs, 70 liters of duck fat and several kilos of chives to spice it all up!
Volunteers even arrived early Monday morning to crack the eggs.
And of course, the frying pan too… is huge. 4.20 meters in diameter for a weight of 850 kg.
The popular festival has been an institution in this Haut-Garonne village since 1973. It is organized by the very serious brotherhood of the giant omelette. The idea has even been emulated around the world, in Belgium, Louisiana, Argentina and even New Caledonia. This year, some have come from afar to break the shell. Like Nicole who made the trip from Quebec to participate in the party.
We do the same thing at home every year on June 24 for the Saint Jean celebrations. With the brotherhoods, we visit each other!
