Eintracht Frankfurt sinks into gray mediocrity | hessenschau.de
Eintracht Frankfurt was unable to convey the euphoria from the Europa League at FC Barcelona to everyday life in the Bundesliga. At Union Berlin, the Hessians lost and had no chance.
Eintracht Frankfurt couldn’t keep up the momentum after the Europa League celebrations in Barcelona and finally sank into the gray midfield of the Bundesliga. Union Berlin defeated the Hessians 2-0 (2-0) on Easter Sunday. Taiwo Awoniyi (17th) and Grischa Prömel (21st) scored the goals. International competition can hardly be achieved for Eintracht via the Bundesliga.
Glasner rotates in Berlin
Coach Oliver Glasner made six changes to the starting eleven after the success in the Europa League at the Alte Försterei. Jens Grahl (first game in 2,164 days), Tuta, Timothy Chandler, Ajdin Hrustic, Jens Petter Hauge and Goncalo Paciencia rotated in for Kevin Trapp (wrist ligament strain), Almamy Touré, Ansgar Knauff, Sebastian Rode, Daichi Kamada and Rafael Borré starting eleven
The roles were clearly divided right from the start: Eintracht was mentally and physically not fully there, while Union was. In the early stages, the ball hit the post after a header from Genki Haraguchi (12′). The next chance was already wriggling in the net.
Awoniyi and Prömel decide game for union
Awoniyi edged through Martin Hinteregger with a nudge, then held his own against Evan N’Dicka and sank the ball into the net for Grahl (17′). Three minutes later, the Berliners cheered again. Union was always a step faster against the sleepy Eintracht and Prömel scored worth seeing from around 17 meters (20th).
The Köpenicker always remained dangerous in this phase. Prömel missed the brace (23′), Rani Khedira failed completely free-standing at Grahl (27′). Eintracht had hardly any air to breathe, the first corner came after 37 minutes.
Jens Petter Hauge had the only Frankfurt chance of the first round. The Norwegian failed after a nice individual action, however, due to the strongly reacting ex-Eintracht player Frederik Rönnow (41st). In any case, Union’s 2-0 lead is absolutely fine.
Game stalls in the second round
Glasner already reacted at the break, took Jesper Lindström off the field and brought on Ragnar Ache. However, the story of the second round is quickly told. Union remained present in the duels, they “annoyed” Eintracht and didn’t let anything burn.
For their part, Frankfurt tried a lot, but it was rarely really dangerous. Eintracht were even lucky when Union pushed forward that Awoniyi shot over the goal after a nice individual performance (62nd). Nothing happened after that, the party stalled.
Eintracht sinks into gray mediocrity
Glasner’s team is in tenth place with 39 points. The gap to sixth place occupied by Union is eight points, and 1. FC Köln have also pulled away (seven points ahead). With four games left, the chance of qualifying for Europe via the Bundesliga is theoretical, Eintracht has arrived in the no man’s land of the Bundesliga. The Frankfurters will therefore concentrate on success in the Europa League.
