Union Berlin jumps to sixth place

1. FC Union Berlin won 2-0 (2-0) against Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 30 of the Bundesliga. The goals for Urs Fischer’s team were scored by Taiwo Awoniyi (17′) and Grischa Prömel (21′). The success moves Union up to sixth place in the table, which would qualify them to play in the Europa Conference League again.
The gameplay
For twelve minutes both teams fought each other with intense midfield duels before Genki Haraguchi hit the right post after a cross from Timo Baumgartl and a back header. Although the ball went out from there, this action seemed to have been a kind of starting signal for a furious Union offensive.
An offensive that was rewarded five minutes later with the 1-0 by Taiwo Awoniyi, who rejected all attempts to defend by the Frankfurt defenders after a through pass and finally finished confidently and from about eleven meters with his left foot to take the lead. Four minutes later, Haraguchi tipped the ball out of the guests’ possession at the height of the Frankfurt penalty area and to Grischa Prömel, who flicked closed for a short time, unstoppably and extremely well worth seeing to make it 2-0.
Union now had the game completely under control and should have made it at least 3-0 thanks to Prömel (23′) and Rani Khedira (27′). Nothing came from Frankfurt apart from a shot by Jens Petter Hauge (41.), which was ultimately easy to parry.
The number of chances suddenly decreases at the beginning of the second half. Only in the 63rd minute did Awoniyi approach the goal again for Union. After a nice solo run over half the court, however, the Nigerian finished just over the goal. both offensive rows remained pale, the teams neutralized themselves in midfield
The Brief Analysis
Union played in the usual 3-5-2, Frankfurt started in a very similar 3-4-3. The only thing that was atypical for Eintracht was one or two personal details, which were probably mainly due to the stress of the European Cup during the week. Possibly striker Goncalo Paciencia also started because Eintracht coach Oliver Glasner hoped to get a chance in the aerial duel against Union defenses around Robin Knoche and Timo Baumgartl.
But it never got that far. Union was already pressing in front of the center line with a desire for duels, which the visibly tired Frankfurters soon had nothing to oppose. Since the passing game of the Berliners showed a high level of precision and determination that day, chance after chance soon arose. Union dominated the game until the break and should have led much more than 2-0. After the break, the hosts skilfully limited themselves to securing the result. Union switched to counterattacks, but was now too imprecise to change the score.
