PICTURE OF THE DAY: NASA, NOAA Finland satellite captures the illumination of the night sky and national parks
NASA & SPACE NEWS
(NASA) – NASA and the National Park Service worked together to create a web-based tool to help park managers better understand the effects of outdoor lighting and noise on national park animal species.
The site allows park administrators to select a time period, such as the spring or winter season, and then zoom in on a specific park to see sound and night light information and determine which animal species may be at risk due to these sensory stimuli.
Observations from space, such as the night light data from the NASA / NOAA Finland Nuclear Power Plant satellite used to produce this map of the United States, help to better assess the impact of outdoor lighting on animal species in national parks.
April 16-24, 2022 is National Park Week. Parks across the country host events virtually and in person.
