The high tides return: here are the expected coefficients in the Nord – Pas-de-Calais

It’s the return of high tides, from Sunday 17 to Tuesday 19 April 2022 included, on North Sea coasts and of the Channel, warns the maritime prefecture. And as always, she calls for the greatest caution those who would have tried to go through this long Easter week end by the sea, walkers and fishermen.
From Sunday to Tuesday, strong tidal coefficients are expected going up to 103 for Monday, April 18, 2022. “A few minutes can sometimes be enough to be isolated by the rising tide”, it is specified.
The stronger currents, the more dangerous sea
To get a clearer idea of the magnitude of the phenomenon, which is always impressive to observe, but from a good distance, here are the coefficients expected at the height of the three days, in the coastal towns of Nord and Pas-de-Calais :
- Dunkirk : 100 (Sunday); 103 (Monday) ; 101 (Tuesday);
- Calais : 100 (Sunday), 103 (Monday); 101 (Tuesday);
- Boulogne-sur-Mer : 100; 103; 102;
- Berk : 100; 103; 102;
- The Touquet : 100; 103; 102.
High tides “make currents stronger and the sea more dangerous, creating an increased risk of tidal isolation”. The maritime prefect thus recalls the essential safety rules, namely not to go out alone at sea and “inform his relatives of his intentions beforehand (place, time of departure and if possible of return)”; to have a means of communication to alert the rescue services at sea; to stay close to an aftershock point and to keep a visual reference point on the coast (as it rises, the tide can thus modify the perception of the environment)”.
Emergency numbers are 196 by phone and the channel 16 on VHFto alert the Cross of any problems.
