Salzburg: Installation “Lumen Christi – Licht Blick” in the church
The art installation “Lumen Christi – Licht Blick” can be seen during Holy Week and Easter in the Salzburg Collegiate Church. The Salzburg artist Andrea Maria Reiser takes up the pictorial speech of Jesus “I am the light of the world”, but also the Easter night celebration, at the entrance of which it says: “Lumen Christi – Christ, the light”. The liturgy reminds us of this primal experience of faith, of the resurrection, when the deacon carries the Easter candle into the dark church, the Archdiocese of Salzburg pointed out in its broadcast (Wednesday) on the silver-plated fabric installation interwoven with crystals.
“Like the Easter candle, the work of art penetrates the church and brings light into the room,” Christian Wallisch-Breitching described the effect. He is the head of university chaplaincy and administrative director of the Collegiate Church, also known as the University Church. “The light that many people are waiting for after times of pandemic, war and uncertainty announces itself in gentle rays. There is beauty, hope in the world, that’s what we want to say,” said the theologian.
When designing the 31 meter high work of art, artist Reiser was also inspired by other motifs from the Bible. On the printed white voile, a material similar to a window blind, there are 71 doves and biblical female figures. “Women are the first witnesses of the resurrection. Jesus entrusts them with the Good News,” said Reiser. “The moment of light brings them into the present.”
The installation can be seen daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Kollegienkirche (Universitätsplatz 20, 5020 Salzburg) until May 1st.
