In peacetime, in Romania we find buildings that look like after the bombing. The indifference and the passage of time have left traces similar to the war on the building – historical monument – in the center of Iași, until 10 years ago the Moldova Philharmonic functioned. Now, a decade later, when the building is about to collapse, the first sign of hope appears. Local authorities have begun looking for sources of funding for its renovation.

January 30, 2013. The last show on stage was held at the Iasi Philharmonic. Neither the artists nor the public knew at that time that after a few days the lock would be placed on the door of the cultural institution. And then, as now, one could see with the naked eye that the historical monument is a real public danger.
The almost 10 years that have passed have left a deep mark on the buildings
In some areas, the walls are only resistant because they are supported by iron beams so that they do not collapse. There are areas in the building where even the slightest touch … the plaster falls. And more than that, over time, various works have been tried to meet the resistance structure of the building, which is why it can be assumed that it was dug and everything remained in the same stadium.
Even in these conditions, during all this time, the artists from the Moldova Philharmonic in Iași continued to rehearse here.
Bujor Prelipcean, director of the Iași Moldova Philharmonic: This is the hall that, now 10 years old, lies without spectators. But the nice thing is that instrumentalists and choristers are allowed to come in. Only the public is not allowed.
Dan Prelipcean, Founder of the Voces Quartet: We separately hope, but I do not know to what extent the mechanisms of this, which, as a rule, are so difficult to unite, will be set in motion that we will solve this painful problem once and for all.
Only now, a decade later, the Iași County Council is looking for sources of funding for the rehabilitation of buildings in the historic center. The new hall would have 200 extra seats and will be similar to the one in Vienna.
Costel Alexe, president of the Iași County Council: We submitted the application for European funds through PNRR, we are also preparing the application for funds from ADR because, after almost a decade, because Iași, as the cultural capital of Romania, needs a headquarters for our philharmonic.
It would take at least 10 million euros to restore the buildings. If, where and when the money will come from, stay tuned. Until then, the imposing historical monument remains covered with canvases, to hide the advanced state of degradation in which it is and to protect those who pass through the area from the pieces of plaster that can be detached at any time from the building.
