Herbert Brandl’s bonsai art celebrates its world premiere
Culture
A bonsai exhibition opened in the city of Salzburg this weekend. However, no living Far Eastern trees, but painted ones: by one of the most famous Austrian painters of the present – the artist Herbert Brandl.
A look from the outside already reveals the passion of the painter Herbert Brandl: his Japanese dwarf trees, which he shows off in large format. The Styrian has been collecting countless bonsai in the courtyard of his Vienna studio since the 1980s. But this joy was suddenly interrupted, says artist Herbert Brandl: “I built up a collection, but it was stolen – I was only very peripherally interested in using it.”
Bonsai to slow down
Only since the corona pandemic and the associated deceleration has his attention turned to bonsai again, also in his artistic work, says Brandl: “I had less stress than usual and was able to deal with the little trees and then just painted them, the trees.”
Invitation to stay
Gallery owner Nikolaus Ruzicska speaks of a great honor and pleasure when a gallery owner is allowed to present an artist with a completely new artistic cycle: “No one has seen that before – it’s a world premiere.” For health reasons, however, the artist Herbert Brandl is currently unable to follow Salzburg come to the start of the exhibition. Brandl would like to invite you to linger with his bonsai paintings – hence the title of the exhibition “Time to Imagine”.
