FC Bayern have their sights set on Salzburg jewel Sesko as Choupo-Moting’s successor
Not only does Robert Lewandowski’s contract at FC Bayern expire in 2023, but also his backup Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. 90 mins has investigated the question of whether the Munich team is already planning younger attackers in 2022 and asked Bayern insider Christian Falk about the subject.
It is well known that FC Bayern would like to focus more on younger players. A victim of the new course could theoretically be Lewandowski backup Choupo-Moting, who is already in his 30s. However, Christian Falk does not believe that the Cameroonian will lose his post in the coming year.
“Bayern are very happy with Choupo. You can rely on him and he has an incredibly high standing in the team because he’s a likeable guy,” he explained. In addition, Bayern are convinced of his technical skills and the striker basically delivered last year against Paris as a Lewandowski replacement.
It can therefore not be assumed that Joshua Zirkzee will find his way back into the Bayern jersey in the summer. The young Dutchman recently let it be known that he doesn’t want to sit on the bench in Munich after his great development in Anderlecht. Zirkzee’s contract only runs until 2023, which leaves his future a little in the dark.
The option to bring in a younger player is probably present in the minds of those responsible, despite the trust in Choupo-Moting. “Lewandowski suggested that to the club a few years ago. At the time it wasn’t discussed, but now it’s already on the screen,” explains the transfer expert.
A hot candidate here is Salzburg jewel Benjamin Šeško. This is a player “whom FC Bayern is very much focused on, but internally in the club there would not be a solution from the summer”. In any case, this makes sense when you consider that the only 18-year-old center forward has only 30 games for RB Salzburg to his credit.
A potential change from Choupo-Moting to Šeško is therefore only planned for 2023. Should the club otherwise notice the player, a transfer in 2022 would be possible, “but from a sporting point of view only from 2023”. Accordingly, the young Slovene would probably be loaned out in the event of a voluntary commitment.
However, it can be assumed that the planned transfers of Gravenberch and Mazraoui as well as personal details such as Lewandowski and Gnabry will have priority at FC Bayern.
