The first plane landed at the airport in Prague-Ruzyně on April 5, 1937. It was a domestic route on the route Piešťany – Zlín – Brno – Prague. Since then, the airport, which has bore the name of former President Václav Havel since 2012, has experienced many ups and downs, more recently. Rise in the First Republic, German occupation, planned communist economy, huge development after the Velvet Revolution and critical pandemic years 2020 and 2021. Vaclav Havel Prague Airport is an integral part of Czechoslovak and later Czech history, as well as the future of our state.
“The celebration of the 85th anniversary will be dignified. We have chosen a sensitive format, also due to pandemics and events in Ukraine. We are planning several events for the public. We have prepared special individual excursions to the airport facilities, which are free. Within hours, their capacity was occupied. However, those interested will not lose the classic excursions. We also made videos about the history and present of Ruzyně Airport as well as podcasts with witnesses, as well as a short film that will deal with this anniversary in a non-traditional way of combining fiction and new scenes, “says Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Board of Prague Airport.
On the occasion of the anniversary, a special website www.letisteslavi85.cz is launched. Visitors will find videos with witnesses about the history of the airport, in which they recall their strongest experiences and guide us through the entire history of the airport from opening to the present day. These videos complement a series of special podcasts with former employees, the pilot and even navigators. Visitors will find the history, current operations and future development plans of the airport in one place.
From April 5, Prague Airport will open an interactive exhibition in Terminal 2. It will include monitors that show the historical development of the airport with a view to the future, and a new documentary about the airport will be on display. There will also be a photo corner and a demonstration of historical and contemporary uniforms. Interactive games will be on site for children.
On anniversary, passengers will also have the opportunity to take advantage of discounted airport services, such as access to airport lounges, a discount at Runway Restaurant and shopping at the airport gift shop.
