AVIGNON

Avignon, Land of Games 2024: Avignon City Hall

Sugar Mizzy April 8, 2022

2021-2024: FOUR YEARS OF SPORTING DYNAMICS BASED ON 5 PRIORITY AREAS

AXIS 1: RHYTHMONS THROUGH SPORT THE DIFFERENT LIFE TIMES OF OUR CHILDREN

Involvement of schools from the start of the 2021-2022 school year in consultation with National Education, the Departmental Olympic and Sports Committee (CDOS 84) and the Sports Union for Primary Education (USEP): no less than 18 schools and 82 classes got involved in the course of Starling, creation of Olympiads… In addition to sharing the emotions of sport, the Games and the values they convey, these initiatives and these times of sports meetings organized for the children of Avignon make it possible to make the link with the commitments made by the City within the framework of the “City friendly to children” label.

Extracurricular time also makes it possible to implement sports, cultural and artistic projects around the 2024 Olympic Games. Thus, the Avignon Loisirs Jeunesse bases and the extracurricular centers of Accueil de Loisirs Sans Logement (ALSH) incorporate the reference to the Olympic values and Paralympics as the red thread of their educational project. The week of Olympic and Paralympic sports activities in connection with the Telethon welcomed 423 children at the end of November 2021

Activities were also offered as part of the SOP Olympic and Paralympic Week in February 2022 for which a project was submitted and validated by the Paris 2024 OCOG (120 children demonstrated these activities).

The sports courses set up by the City during school vacation times and the summer activities carried out as part of the “A Summer in Avignon” operation complete this mobilization aimed at introducing everyone to physical and sports practices in all their dimensions and their diversity. From the summer of 2021, the “Summer in Avignon” scheme has been tinged with the colors of sport and Olympism with a proposal for sports activities and intergenerational events on the theme of the Olympics.

In 2021, more than 1,000 children were able to participate through these various initiatives in learning about and raising awareness about Olympic and Paralympic sports activities.

PRIORITY 2: INVOLVING AND MOBILIZING THE AVIGNONN SPORTS WORLD

To federate the Avignonnaises and the Avignonnais around this formidable event which is the holding of the Olympic Games in France, the City wishes to associate its sports clubs. This partnership could be expressed through the participation of sports clubs and the university sports association in the projects and activities carried out by the City, but also through the latter’s support for their events and initiatives which place the values of Olympism in order to wear the colors of Avignon sport loud and clear until 2024.

PRIORITY 3: THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, LET’S VIBRATE “TERRE DE JEUX”!

Rich in sporting events carried live or in support of the associative fabric, the City wants to commit itself this year to promoting and labeling “Terre de Jeux 2024” the major events that punctuate the sporting calendar of Avignon: Tour de Provence, Tour des Remparts (more than 1,000 runners took part on March 27 after a 2-year absence from the Tour), Nocturne des Papes, 10 km from the City of the Popes, Vélo Passion… Some of the unifying and popular annual meetings such as the Forum des associations and its “Sports Village”, the “Sports Handicap” Village integrated into extracurricular activities around Olympic Day

Spades and Paralympics or even Olympism Day will be included in this “Land of Games” dynamic (notably through the universality of the practices they underlie).

PRIORITY 4: LET US ALL BE PLAYERS IN “TERRE DE JEUX 2024”

By setting up one-off activities or regular meetings, the City wishes to motivate as many people as possible in Avignon by allowing them to access physical and leisure activities, and to discover in their local living spaces, the many sports facilities carried out in our parks, some of which have moreover been directly supported by them as part of the Participatory Budgets. In addition to the offer developed by the City for seniors and the CCAS, free sports workshops open to all will be offered this summer free of charge in the parks and gardens of the city, in particular at La Plaine. des Sports and Parc Chico Mendes, two emblematic sites for these free sports practices.

AXIS 5: CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE DYNAMIC OF RENOVATION AND MODERNIZATION OF OUR SPORTS EQUIPMENT

The ambition to democratize sport and give it pride of place in the daily lives of the people of Avignon goes hand in hand with a strong policy in terms of sports equipment. The “Terre de Jeux 2024” label should make it possible to promote the City’s sporting heritage, such as the Halles Sportives Génicoud selected as the Preparation Center for the 2024 Games.

Plaine des Sports, Nautical Stadium, Halles Sports Génicoud, Roland Montet Dojo, Gillardeaux Stadium, Jacques and Andrée Peyronne Gymnasium, Manen Stadium, Martelle Gymnasium… in six years, many sports facilities have been renovated by the City. Among the most recent, the Philippe de Girard gymnasium will be the first facility integrated under the banner of Olympism. In the next four years, it will be the turn of the four local swimming pools, in particular Jean Clément and Chevalier de Folard, the Chevalier de Folard gymnasium, and the Champfleury weapons room.

After phase 2 of the Plaine des Sports, included last summer, and which made it possible to complete the offer with free access sports structures (development of two mini-tennis courts, a badminton court and a grass volleyball court), work on phase 3 began in March 2022 to create a large crossing from Avenue de l’Amandier. This real green setting of 7 ha, is entirely dedicated to the practice of sport and relaxation.

After being chosen in June 2021 by the CDOS and USEP to host World Olympic and Paralympic Sports Day for Vaucluse schools, the Plaine des Sports will be mobilized this year by the Departmental Committee for Adapted Sport for the animation of the JOP.

2024: OLYMPIC YEAR, APOTHEOSIS OF AVIGNON, LAND OF GAMES

From December 1 to 31, 2024, actions and initiatives for practices and sporting events within the city of Avignon will multiply, with obviously the highlight from July 26 to August 11 during which the Paris Olympics will take place.

To prepare for 2024, the year of all possibilities, and complement the ambition and momentum driven by the Olympic year, Avignon is seizing this tremendous opportunity to bring together the driving forces of the Avignon sports world, recognized nationally and International. Thus, in addition to the creation of a Terre de Jeux 2024 strategic committee, made up of personalities who uphold the values of sport, the City is setting up an agora-type participatory assembly in order to bring out with all the inhabitants, through real boxes ideas and imagination, this exceptional year.
