UN suspended Russia’s membership in the Council for Human Adaptation due to war with Ukraine
The UN General Assembly on Thursday suspended Russia’s membership in the UN Appointment Council because of evidence of “gross and systemic violations” of human rights by the military during the invasion of Ukraine.
With the exception of Russia, 93 voted, 24 voted against, 58 abstained. Among the countries that voted against were Algeria, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Bolivia, Burundi, China, Cuba, Syria, Eritrea and Ethiopia. At the same time, the resolution was supported in the ranks of the older generation of Serbia and Myanmar, where there are many allies of Moscow.
The text of the meeting, which was put to a vote, concluded “a deep problem in connection with the ongoing humanitarian and human rights crisis in Ukraine” after the Russian Invasion.
The proposal to exclude Russia on Monday was made by the United States – this happened the day after the publication in the media of evidence of mass fans in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.
Despite the undeniable circumstances, confirmed by Western journalists and human rights organizations, Russia denies the involvement of its military in the deaths of civilians. On Tuesday, after the inclusion of the UN Security Council in the permanent representative of Russia, Vasily Nebenzya, said that one world resident of the Ukrainian population at the Bucha points did not cross during the stay of the Russian military there. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Greenfield, in an interview with NPR, said that Russia’s exclusion from the membership of the HRC would be symbolic, since, according to her, Russia did everything possible to “damage order and put under the withdrawal of UN values.”
According to Reuters, Russia warned that voting “yes” or abstaining from prosecution as an “unfriendly gesture” that has repercussions for Moscow’s bilateral relations with the countries that voted.
The Human Decision Board does not make legally binding decisions, but its assembly does receive important political signals and also authorizes an investigation. Russia was one of the most active members of the Council, the suspension of membership in Russia is not acceptable.
At the same time, the Western media believe that Russia still takes influence on the Council, but through intermediaries.
