Sweden is aiming for a World Cup qualifier against Ireland after a 15-0 victory in Georgia
Sweden can qualify for the World Cup 2023 by beating Ireland on Tuesday in Gothenburg after beating the unfortunate Georgians 15-0 in Tbilisi to confirm at least one playoff spot.
The Olympic silver medalists took a lead with seven goals before half an hour, with Filippa Angeldahl’s early strike added by Fridolina Rolfo, Stina Blackstenius, Amanda Ilestedt and Jonna Andersson.
Manchester City midfielder Angeldahl then completed his hat-trick, while a position from Juventus’ Lina Hurtig ensured that they matched the total – 11 – that Vera Pauw’s Irish team achieved against the Georgians in Dublin before Christmas.
Additional goals from Rebecka Blomqvist, Sofia Jakobsson and a fierce Kosovar Asllani ensured that the Swedes took six from six in the qualifiers.
Sweden is now eleven points ahead of Ireland, even though they have played two more matches before their clash next Tuesday, where an audience record for a women’s international match is expected at Galma Ullevi.
Ireland continued their preparations tonight with a warm-up match against a U15 League of Ireland underage boys before their departure on Saturday night.
