The Kölner Haie are in the play-off quarterfinals. Coach Uwe Krupp’s team also won the second game of the first play-off round against ERC Ingolstadt on Thursday with a 3:2 (0:2, 2:0, 0:0) after extra time. In the tenth minute of overtime, Maurice Edwards shot the Haie into the quarter-finals with a double advantage and brought the Schanzer season to an end. The match winner was Cologne keeper Justin Pogge, who kept his team in the game for a long time against the Ingolstadt team, who were initially under pressure. Already on Tuesday, the tenth place in the preliminary round Cologne had won the first game of the “Best-of-Three” series 4:3.
Who the Haie play against on Sunday will be decided on Friday in the crucial third game of the second pre-play-off series between Nürnberg and Düsseldorfer EG. The Franconians forced the decisive game with a spectacular 6:5 (0:3, 2:1, 3:1), also after extra time. Gregor MacLeod scored the winning goal in the eighth minute of extra time. Previously, Dane Fox had brought back the game with three goals at the beginning to undisciplined francs. After a match penalty after a bad check by Chris Brown, Düsseldorf had already led 3-0 and 4-1. “You should then make ends meet,” DEG captain Alex Barta quarreled at MagentaSport. “But that’s how it is sometimes. We’ll be there.”
Head coach Harold Kreis, who flew to his native Canada on Monday due to a family emergency, is said to be there again on Friday. “The commitment and the fight of both teams is great,” said Nuremberg’s sporting director Stefan Ustorf after the dramatic victory.
