Climbing – Munich – “More finals”: Sport climbers motivated in the EM year – Bavaria
Munich (dpa) – The German sport climbers are highly motivated to start the new competition season with the European Championship highlight in Munich. “We want to reach more finals in the World Cup season than last year and of course see our athletes on the podium,” said the sports director of the German Alpine Club (DAV), Martin Veith, before the World Cup opener this Friday in Switzerland.
Veith is optimistic about the European Championships on Munich’s Königsplatz from August 11th to 18th. If everything is right on the days of the competition, “we hope for a place on the podium. Our goal is three to four finals.”
There will be changes for the DAV this year as a result of the adjustments to the program for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In addition to the new combination format of bouldering and lead, i.e. classic lead climbing on a rope, the athletes in France are also fighting for medals in the individual discipline speed.
“In speed climbing we want to shorten the gap to the world’s best,” explained Veith. Therefore, the DAV will from now on bundle the fastest climbers in Germany in a new training group. In addition, the Austrian Ingo Filzwieser will become national coach in the new combined format.
