With 11,000 spectators, Thursday March 31, at the Zénith de Toulouse, Orelsan won one of the best scores in the hall. In a boosted atmosphere where the hits of the singer hit the bull’s eye.
It is 8 p.m. this Thursday, the streets in front of the Zénith de Toulouse are congested. Spectators who have already arrived swarm in the entrance hall. On stage in the first part, the Parisian rap group 3 pour 100 heats up the room. At the end of their performance, the 11,000 fans of all ages are waiting. While waiting for the arrival of the Caen star, some sip a beer, others revise the texts. Samuel, 24, has been listening to Orelsan for over 10 years. He had already attended the Zenith of Bordeaux and Lille several years ago. “I don’t know what to expect, this album gave me a little less emotion than the others, but I know that on stage it’s always a show”, he smiles. Next door, his brother-in-law Pablo, a little older, listens to “really Marseille rap, I don’t know Orelsan very well”. I expect to listen to radio sounds,” he says.
In a lighted room, Orelsan appears. White T-shirt, blue cap, he faces the cheers of a crazy audience. He begins “Jour Meilleur” a cappella, the public sings it in unison. Spotlights and screens turned off, he asks the spectators what they think of the decor. After the negative response, the rapper quips by saying: “In Toulouse, you don’t understand the minimalist decor”.
“I remember when I was a loser”
Suddenly the room lights up in the colors of “Civilization”, his latest album. He then raps his latest songs, and embraces a public on fire with “The smell of gasoline”. A small moment of nostalgia follows, where he remembers when he was “a loser”. “You could see it in the documentary series ‘Never show this to anyone’, about summer for at least four or five episodes,” he laughs. On a colorful and immersive scenography, Orelsan raps his classics “Jimmy Punchline”, “Le chant des sirens”. Spectators vibrate louder than bass.
To face a flash forest, Orelsan begins “Alone with people around”. After more than 1h30 of show, the one who sold more than 400,000 copies of his latest album gives the end clap with a credits. Charlotte summarizes: “It was extreme. Two steps away, Jonathan, his brother, has the flag of “Civilization” tied around his neck. “The emotion is crazy. Orelsan, I love him”.
