Hanover (dpa / lni) – The number of traffic fatalities on Lower Saxony’s roads remained at a low level last year. As in the Corona year 2020, the reason is likely to be the pandemic again – together with the widespread home office, so that fewer people were out on the streets. Federal Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) wants to present the exact figures on Friday (12.30 p.m.).
According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, fewer people died on the roads nationwide in the first six months of 2021 than in the same period last year. A total of 148 people died in traffic, 33 fewer than in the first half of 2020.
Nationwide, fewer people died in traffic accidents last year than at any time since records began. According to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office, there were 2,569 fatalities, six percent fewer than in the previous year. The main reason here too: the reduced traffic due to lockdown and home office and home schooling.
