Country expects more Ukraine refugees – salzburg.ORF.at
timeline
The state of Salzburg and the aid organizations expect a significant increase in Ukrainians seeking help. Salzburg is currently preparing for around 5,000 people who are to be cared for, supported and integrated. Around 1,8000 Ukrainian refugees have found refuge in Salzburg so far.
The first refugees who arrived in Salzburg were only passing through. Now more and more Ukrainians want to stay in the state. Among the 1,800 of them, 90 percent are women, children and the elderly. Caritas arranges private quarters in which people are housed.
Looking for more quarters
A large part is also accommodated in basic supply quarters and also receives the basic supply of the country – such as money for meals and German courses. The aim is also to integrate the refugees into the work process as quickly as possible, according to the state. There are already basic supply quarters in the districts, such as in Tamsweg (Lungau), Saalfelden (Pinzgau), St. Gilgen (Flachgau). Further quarters are being sought, they must above all be suitable for families and children.
Vaccination buses bring refugees to quarters
After the refugees arrived in Salzburg, they initially received help and information from Caritas. They will be registered by the police at the Red Cross arrivals center near the exhibition center and will receive food and drink. You can also spend the night there if you don’t want to stay in Salzburg but are just passing through. Those who want to stay in Salzburg are taken to quarters. These trips are taken over by the buses that were previously used as vaccination buses, according to the Red Cross.
