England ratings
Jordan Pickford – 8th
Made a clever stop to his left by Xhaka in the first half and followed that up later with a sensational reflex save over the crossbar.
As the back five collapsed around him in the opening 30 minutes, Pickford stood up and made the saves that kept England in the game.
Under pressure from Aaron Ramsdale, Pickford continues to use England as a happy escape from his struggles for Everton.
Kyle Walker-Peters – 6th
Walker-Peters, one of two England debutants, missed a sitter in the first 45 before thankfully seeing the offside flag go up to spare his blush.
The performance he’s so well known for at St Mary’s was absent, but Foden’s desire to slip into a central role didn’t help keep Walker-Peters isolated at right.
Would have impressed Southgate as he regained the ball high up the pitch just before Shaw equalized.
Marc Guehi – 6
Was caught on the wrong foot a couple of times when the Swiss strikers found space behind the English defence.
The left flank of England’s defense looked particularly vulnerable, with Switzerland often finding space to create between Guehi and Shaw.
Grown into the game and finished it strong – understandable given his lack of experience.
Ben White – 6
Came on for John Stones just minutes before kick-off after the Manchester City man injured himself while warming up.
The Arsenal defender’s calm on the ball and spot-on distribution showed he could be the antidote to Harry Maguire’s shortcomings.
But he also showed his own fragility, losing Embolo as the Swiss striker peeled back and nodded home for the opener.
Conor Coady – 6th
When Stones came on just before the game, Coady suddenly found himself the most experienced international centre-back in England’s starting XI.
Was sovereign from set pieces at times when England were under a bit of pressure but doesn’t seem capable enough at the heart of an international defence.
Luke Shaw – 6
Shaw was out of position when engaging high up on the pitch – and often displayed the defensive weaknesses he was criticized for playing for Man Utd in recent months.
But he gave England fans a throwback to his Euro final goal by showing them how well he can hit the ball in the last third – and bagged his second for his country.
Was hooked on the hour to make way for debutant Tyrick Mitchell.
