At the same time, the meeting of EU Foreign and Defense Ministers on the Strategic Compass is aimed at adopting the document, with a view to its approval by the Heads of State and Government at the European Council on 24-25 March.
At the meeting in Brussels, the main topics on the agenda are: the latest developments in the security situation in the Black Sea region caused by the illegal Russian aggression against Ukraine, and the identification of ways in which the EU can provide immediate support; substantially for the Republic of Moldova, during an exchange of views with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Nicu Popescu. The latest developments on the situation in Mali are also on the agenda of the meeting.
A joint meeting of EU foreign ministers and defense ministers (in jumbo format) will be held on the sidelines of the EAC, during which the founding document of the EU Strategic Compass will be discussed and adopted.
Also, Minister Bogdan Aurescu, along with other counterparts from EU member states, will attend an informal working breakfast with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Northern Macedonia, Bujar Osmani.
According to the MFA, the discussion on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is taking place against the background of the latest developments on the ground, which show an increasingly worrying trend – repeated attacks on civilians and non-military targets, deepening humanitarian crisis and ongoing war propaganda and disinformation campaigns. .
Thus, Aurescu will support the need to focus EU action on measures that could have a concrete and immediate effect on the ground, such as supporting all efforts to de-escalate the situation and protect civilians by creating safe humanitarian corridors, continuing support for Ukraine, managing the situation . and the flow of people fleeing Russian aggression. In this context, the Romanian official will reiterate the significant efforts made and the concrete measures adopted by Romania in support of Ukrainian refugees coming to our country, including through the humanitarian hub in Suceava, operational since March 9.
At the same time, he reiterated that, in the current unprecedented context, the EU must reaffirm the European perspective of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia.
Also on the sidelines of the meeting will be a discussion of European Foreign Ministers with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Nicu Popescu. The discussion takes place following Romania’s proposal, at a time marked by the particularly strong impact of the crisis in Ukraine on the economy and the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
