There is interest in the metropolis for free sorting of biowaste. More than 8,000 households have applied for the biopoplenic since the beginning of the year, and the Prague services expect another influx of applicants in April, when the spring season begins. In total, about 24,000 brown containers are weighed from citizens in the metropolis. In addition, Prague’s largest collection company is launching a campaign to popularize the separation of biowaste and educate Praguers about what does not belong in biowaste.
According to statistics, plant biowaste accounts for up to 20% of mixed municipal waste. One-fifth of the contents of black bins, which could be used effectively, thus travel to ZEVO Malešice, where it is burned.
“Most European cities have the ambition to increase the share of bio-waste separation and Prague is no exception. In the two years since it was included in the sorting of biowaste in the Prague-wide waste system, the people of Prague sorted it almost 11,000 tons. This number is very likely to grow, “says Prague Services spokesman Radim Mana.
Bio-waste has been a part of Prague’s waste management since 2020. Until then, bio-waste collection was available as a commercial service.
“In the case of bio-waste, the component is not desirable to end up in a recovery facility (ZEVO). Biowaste is a source of securities. It can be used to make compost and then used to take care of the city’s greenery, “said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlubuček.
What (does not) belong to biowaste
Biowaste from brown containers travels to Prague composting plants, where it is further processed. There is no manual sorting here. That is why it is important that what does not belong in the waste is not. These include all types of bags and packaging materials, bones, skins, oils, dairy products, pet bedding, animal excrement, feathers, hair, hair, dead animals, contaminated sawdust, shavings and bark, and hazardous waste.
Conversely, it is possible to throw grass, leaves, fruit and vegetable residues, tea bags, coffee grounds, plant residues, potted soil, weeds, sods, brooms, wood chips from branches and shrubs, sawdust, shavings, bark, hay and straw. “Our campaign entitled Let’s give back to nature what belongs to it will be about the correct sorting of biowaste and its popularization,” continues Radim Mana from the Prague Services.
