British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is organizing a summit in London next week with the leaders of Northern European and Baltic countries, to which the Netherlands has also been invited. The summit will mainly focus on the war in Ukraine and European security. Minister of Defense Kajsa Ollongren is present on behalf of the Netherlands, she writes in a letter to the House of Representatives.
“European security has been shaken by Russia’s attack on Ukraine and we will take action with our partners to ensure we are stronger and more connected here,” Johnson said on Saturday. He invited all countries affiliated to the Joint Expeditionary Force (JET) to the summit. The JET is a military coalition, led by the United Kingdom, that focuses on security in northern Europe. In addition to the Netherlands and the UK, this includes Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland and Sweden.
The summit follows immediately after a major NATO exercise on Monday, which is being organized by Norway. It is the largest military exercise since the Cold War. 30,000 troops from 27 countries will train in freezing temperatures.
