Concert series “Women in Jazz” starts at the Jazz Club Hannover
The Jazz Club Hannover organizes a ten-part concert series with female jazz musicians in order to achieve greater visibility for women in jazz. The project is funded by the NORD/LB Kulturstiftung. The series will kick off with Texas jazz musician Hailey Tuck, who will be performing at the Jazz Club on March 13th.
The jazz industry is still internationally regarded as a male domain. Even today, the German jazz scene is dominated by men, both on and behind the stage. A 2016 study by the University of Hildesheim, commissioned by the Darmstadt Jazz Institute, IG Jazz Berlin and the Union of German Jazz Musicians, came to the conclusion that women only make up one fifth of the professional group in the German jazz scene. The German Jazz Union also drew attention to the blatant imbalance in the jazz industry in 2018 with the “Joint Declaration on Equal Opportunities for Women in Jazz”. In addition, a closer look at the proportion of women in the German jazz scene reveals a striking discrepancy: while 86 percent of female jazz musicians are active as jazz singers, the proportion of female jazz instrumentalists is just 12 percent.
“With the “Women in Jazz” series, we want to give young jazz musicians a stage to draw attention to a blatant imbalance in the jazz scene,” says Dr. Vanessa Erstmann, 1st Chairperson of the Jazz Club Hannover eV “In this way, prospective female jazz musicians should also be encouraged to go their own way with self-confidence. This project is particularly close to my heart and I am glad that thanks to the support of the NORD/LB Kulturstiftung and the support of the Society of Friends of Jazz, we are able to realize the concert series even in these difficult times, in which the cultural industry is still finding itself. “
The Jazz Club Hannover has been trying for a number of years to ensure a balanced presentation of the genders on the stage of the Jazzkeller on the Lindener Berg. The Jazz Club was founded in 1966 and is one of the most renowned jazz venues in Europe. With the election of the then 35-year-old Hanoverian Vanessa Erstmann as 1st chairwoman in August 2020, not only did a generation change take place – at the same time, the management of the club was placed in the hands of a woman for the first time in 54 years, which attracted attention throughout the German jazz scene.
The “Women in Jazz” series of events will run from March to December 2022 and will introduce young jazz musicians, both singers and instrumentalists, of different nationalities and styles.
