The ghost of Saint Nicholas van Myrakerk on the Lijnbaansgracht feels pressured by their archbishop and the Russian state. The church reports this in a press release†
Last week Patriarch Kirill, the boss of the Moscow Patriarchate, spoke out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In the press release, the church states shortly after the position on Kirill has been made. He would have to apologize from the Amsterdam religious. After the service, he is said to have told them that “both the Patriarchate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow are currently paying attention” to the church.
‘Pressed by the Russian state’
History has been pressured ‘by both the bishop and the Russian state to return to the early, prolonged position. These pressures endanger the spiritual security of the church community and its members.” The church about this no longer proceed with Kirill.
A request has been made to the Athenagoras Metropolitan Police of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople) to be incorporated into his diocese. This proposal has yet to be discussed at a General Parish Meeting on March 26. Until then, no meetings will be held at the church. For safety reasons, but also for ‘pastoral flights’, the church writes. “In this tense situation, it will be impossible to achieve the prayerful atmosphere during the services that we strive for.”
The entrance to the church on the Lijnbaansgracht is Tuesday daub with the pro-Russian Z symbol. The church is Russian Orthodox, but is also visited by believers from other countries.
