Temporary refuge is more advantageous than asylum.
BRATISLAVA. Despite the fact that 165,000 refugees crossed the Slovak-Ukrainian border by Thursday, “only” about 14,000 of them asked for temporary refuge.
The state does not have exact numbers on how many refugees remain in Slovakia and how many continue.
The director of the Migration Office, Ján Orlovský, claims that so far there are an estimated 40,000 of them left in Slovakia, which is about a quarter of those who crossed the border.
Those who lived on Ukraine like foreigners, they return home with the help of embassies. However, there are more and more people who do not have contacts in Slovakia or in the EU.
They are probably still considering what to do. “They have no plan, then they need to rest first and when they decide whether to stay in Slovakia or move on,” says Zuzana Vatráľová, the Bratislava branch of the International Organization for Migration.
So far, they are mostly concentrated in the east of Slovakia in Bratislava, but even that may change. Vatrálová assumes that they will settle mainly in large cities, where there are more job opportunities, in areas where they have relatives and acquaintances.
If the refugees decide to stay in Slovakia after crossing the border, they have three options to legally treat their stay.
