The recently redeveloped Rooseveltplaats and the Operaplein are given extra cachet by this new lighting plan. Design bureau Architecture Radiance35 Société Civile drew up the preliminary design. the agency proposes to work with different layers of light. Remote lighting creates a basic light layer on the Flemish Opera and Hotel Wagner. In a second vertical layer the future spots on the facade showing some well-chosen details and vector illustration. A third layer focuses on depth and drama by illuminating the loggia and various window frames. Moreover, this lighting plan interacts with the square by working with a number of sharply defined theater spots that focus on the stairs and the square.

“What I really like about this project is that we provide lighting during the week, but that we let the lighting work with scenarios via an intelligent control,” says alderman for Public Domain Erica Caluwaerts (Open Vld). “For example, extra details can be highlighted during performance evenings to draw people in to the event. The Flemish Opera can adjust the color palette and the light intensity on a number of surfaces and color them on their program”.

Energy-conscious and sustainable lighting will be used for the lighting of the opera house. For several years now, the city has been using 100% LED lighting for this purpose. This choice was also made in the earlier lighting plans for Het Steen and Antwerp-Central station.

After this preliminary design, the designer and grid operator Fluvius draw up a final design and plan of approach. The work on the lighting itself is planned for 2022 and 2023.
