Is Angel Fernandez the right coach for Anthony Joshua?
Fans may not know who Anthony Joshua will be fighting for next, but the former world heavyweight champion has appointed a new coach.
Angel Fernandez will star in Joshua’s Corner, leading to a debate between Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora at JABS over whether he’s the right man to train London’s gold medalist in 2012.
“He should be with a world-renowned coach, it will not be the guy who took him there from the Olympic gold to the heavyweight championship in Robert McCracken,” said Mora.
“He visited some of the best coaches in the world, what happened to Eddy Reynoso, what happened to Ronnie Shields, what happened to Robert Garcia, everyone else he trained with, Virgil Hunter, these are world-renowned coaches who can bring something to the table.
“Experience at championship level which is all he needs, a strategy and experience.
“Instead, he goes with a B-side with someone who has been with him in Angel Fernandez for the past three years, the last three camps.
“Okay, they have some chemistry, but this is going to be the biggest scene you can have.”
Meanwhile, Mannix could see why Joshua has chosen Fernandez because of the chemistry the two already have from previous training camps.
“I can see why Joshua does this because choosing Angel Fernandez is like splitting the child, it puts a new man in charge of your career and training camp forward, but also someone you are familiar with,” Mannix said.
“As you pointed out, Fernandez has been a part of Team AJ for the past three years.
“He was one of the coaches brought in after the 2019 loss to Andy Ruiz and he was one of the architects behind the pitch that helped beat Ruiz six months later.”
But while this past relationship may work to Joshua’s advantage, there are some doubts as to whether the style Fernandez will try to implement will benefit the former uniformed heavyweight champion in the world.
“One thing I know about studying Fernandez from studying him, his philosophies, some at least, comes from the Cuban experience.
“He’s worked with some Cuban coaches before, it’s not a style I think will work for Anthony Joshua.
“Cuban boxers and Cuban coaches often try to outbox opponents, when AJ enters the next fight, whether it is against Usyk or someone else, he can not try to outbox them.
“He has to use his full six-foot-six frame, his power, he has to take the fight to his next opponent.”
