in Belgium the price of petrol is more expensive than in France, service stations sell at a loss or close
In the current context, refueling in Belgium is no longer really a good plan. The situation with our neighbors is just as critical, the current rates are even a little higher than with us.
“tomorrowwe may be closing, I don’t know. Company information is falling hour by hour”. A Chimay, 15 km from the border between Belgium and Aisne, Georgy Haumont worries. Like many others, this 48-year-old gas station attendant has never experienced such a situation, “This is the first time that i see this“, he admits.
As in France and many other countries, our Belgian neighbors are also affected by soaring fuel prices. Due to the war in Ukraine, the prices of gasoline and diesel almost everywhere rose to the symbolic mark of two euros per litre. Prices are even slightly higher in Belgium than in France. Count 2 119€ per liter of diesel in Laon in the Aisne, against €2,286 a Momignies in Wallonia.
“Previously we discount the maximum rates set by the government, now we don’t“, admits Georgy Haumont. Everywhere, consumers are increasingly exasperated. In Belgium, pump attendants are even more so.
In the country, a hundred service stations no longer deliver gasoline or diesel due to the regulations in force. Fuel prices are regulated and the sale price is capped for seven days. “Since March 1, we have been buying more than we are selling. The official price does not follow the market. This is a disaster for the consumer and for the operator“, adds Hasan Syedchairman of the Euro Plus group, manager of petrol stations.
The Belgian government should, in the coming days, provide help to consumers in the face of this soaring price. But for the moment, there is no question of going back on the compulsory maximum price.
